IMPROVING WASH AND HYGIENE PRACTICES FOR COMMUNITY

There has been a high prevalence of diseases related to poor sanitation and hygiene in different communities of Darfur . This has been predominantly due to lack of access to safe drinking water. It is also coupled by poor behavioral practices by the
community in promoting good sanitation and hygiene.
On April 2021 UPO and VSF Germany partnered in WASH project in response to the affected Population in Nertiti, Golo and Rokero localities of Central Darfur State and Kerenik, El Geneina, and Sirba Localities of West Darfur State The project aimed to address humanitarian needs and provided emergency support to conflict affected communities in six localities in Central and west Darfur states focusing on gaps in food security and livelihoods as well as water, sanitation and hygiene. The targeted benef iciar ies were mainly IDPs, returnees and destitute host communities who
suffered from the impacts of protracted conflict and displacement , deteriorating macro economy, political instability and more recently intercommunal tension (West Darfur) , in addition to COVID- 19 crisis.

"I NOW KNOW HOW TO KEEP MYSELF AND MY FAMILY SAFE FROM COVID-19" SAID HAFEEZA

THE WORKSHOPS ASSOCIATED WITH THE PROJECT FOCUSED ON THE BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE AND IMPORTANCE OF WASH, PROPER SANITATION AND HYGIENE, AS WELL AS PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS OF PRINCIPLES. UPO WASH TRAINERS LED THE WASH WORKSHOPS,FOCUSING ON THE BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE OF THE COMMUNITY AS WELL AS THE POSITIVE EFFECTS ON BETTER SANITATION PRACTICES THEY CAN HAVE.

"I KNOW NOW HOW TO PROTECT MYSELF AND MY FAMILY FROM COVID-19" SAID HAFEEZA WHILE SHE WAS RECIEVING HER COVID-19 SANITATION KIT.

THE SUSTAINABILITY OF THE PROJECT WAS DEMONSTRATED IN THE FINAL EVALUATION SESSION CARRIED OUT WITH THE COMMUNITY MEMBERS. THE COMMUNITY MEMBERS WERE ABLE TO ACCURATELY RECALL THE INFORMATION TAUGHT IN THE PROJECT’S WORKSHOPS.
THIS INCLUDED WASH KNOWLEDGE, AS WELL AS IMPLEMENTATION OF BETTER LEADERSHIP PRACTICES. THEK NOWLEDGE AND INFORMATION ACQUIRED BY THE COMMUNITY MEMBERS WOULD BE USED TO EMPOWER THE REST OF THE COMMUNITY TO CHANGE THEIR BEHAVIORAL PRACTICES IN THE PROMOTION OF PROPER SANITATION AND HYGIENE IN THE COMMUNITY.

UPO seeks to promote peace and development amongst the communities of Sudan.
